Reminiscences from my journey on Street Scholar’s Southern Africa Birding Safari, 19 Jan-2 Feb 2024.
3 March 2024
“Hear! Do you hear them? Lions are roaring very near us, simply past the buildings.”
Lion’s roar (sound from Pixabay)
We had been about to eat dessert on our first night time at Khulu Bush Camp when our information, Sam Mushandu, alerted us to a sound within the night time. All of us fell silent to pay attention.
That afternoon our Street Scholar Birding Safari had been on our first recreation drive close to Hwange Nationwide Park, Zimbabwe. We’d seen many birds however no lions … but.

The solar had set two hours in the past. It was fairly darkish. And there have been lions exterior. Roaring.
“Who desires to seek out the lions?” stated Sam.
Warning flags went off in my mind however others raised their fingers so I tamped down my doubts with the thought, “When will you ever get this chance once more? By no means. So go!”
We piled into the safari automobile and zoomed down the grime observe. Sam was on the radio with James, a Khulu information who had gone out forward of us to seek out the lions. All of a sudden an elephant loomed in the dead of night, blocking the street. We slowed and it stepped into the bush.

Then one other elephant, then three, then 4.

Stunned by loopy people pelting by the darkish the elephants gave the impression to be telling one another, “Hey! that truck is coming down the observe. You’re in my means! Transfer into the bush!” It struck me as humorous and I couldn’t cease laughing.

The elephants melted into the bush, then James radioed that he had discovered the lions, one male and two females. We circled and headed towards them.
By the point we arrived the male had moved off however we discovered each females squinting within the shiny search mild. My photograph reveals how distant the primary one was.

What an unforgettable expertise!
Grateful because of our information Sam Mushandu, to James (information at Khulu Bush Camp) who is aware of the habits of lions, Khulu Bush Camp itself for an exquisite keep, and Street Scholar for arranging the tour. And thanks to Frank Koch for his images of our night time safari.
p.s. In case you’re questioning what a lion seems like when it roars, right here’s a video from Brookfield Zoo. Understand that each women and men roar so all three could have been talking that night time within the bush, 24 January 2024.
